There are a few reasons why your ad might not be live:

  • Expired: agreement comes to the end of the period of validity
  • Removed: Ads are removed from our end if we believe it breaches one or more of our posting rules. An email with more information as to why this has happened will be sent to your registered email address.
  • Needs Edits: Ads are occasionally placed in edit mode from our end. We will send you an email advising you what needs to be tweaked. Once that’s done, the advert is good to go.
  • Processing: Ads can take some time to go through our systems. The exact amount of time depends on the ad and how busy Gumtree is at the time. You’ll receive an email to let you know when it’s officially gone live.
  • Haven’t received an email? Make sure to check both your inbox and spam folder.

The most common cause of this is misspellings. Check that the place name or postcode you entered is spelt correctly. If you believe a location should be recognised and it is not, please contact us.

  • No duplicates, please
Don’t create more than one ad for the same item, or create multiple accounts.
  • Don’t leave it live
Once your ad has done its job, delete it. If you don’t, other users might still contact you about it, which is a nuisance for them and you.
  • Get the category right
Our categories work hard to connect the right ad with the right tenant. You’ll get better results when your ad appears in the right place.
  •  Follow the ad template
Keep website links and contact details in the designated place and out of your ad title, description and photos.

Writing a great ad

  • Be clear. Write a clear and honest description of your vacancy to attract the right people. Say if your property isn’t available yet, and when it will be.
  • Use plain English and keep it clean. You’re welcome to add a translation in another language at the end of your description.

Avoiding Scammers

Our guide to spotting phishing scams and keeping your information safe.

Technology now plays a big part in all of our lives. Most of the time it’s a positive, but occasionally fraudsters use it to try to scam others through a method known as ‘phishing’.

What’s phishing?

Phishing is when somebody emails, texts or calls another person pretending to be a reputable company. In reality, they’re a scammer and they’re trying to steal personal details. They’re often after passwords, banking information, or personal identification.

How can I protect myself?

  • Protect your computer with the latest version of your web browser and use an anti-virus program.
  • Never let your email address or passwords be publicly visible on any website.
  • Always check contact numbers and websites independently.
  • Hang up on suspicious callers.
  • Don’t open suspicious links or websites.
  • Don’t respond to suspicious texts or emails. You can forward texts to your network provider using 7726, or just delete them.
  • If you’re suspicious of a business that’s been in touch, contact them directly to check it was them.
  • Don’t pay anything if you’re told you’ve won a prize or competition.
  • Look for spelling and grammar mistakes in emails, texts and on websites.
  • Look for inaccurate brand names or company logos.
  • Check the internet for information on the latest scams. There are often online warnings, and police websites carry up-to-date information.
  • Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t ‘feel right’, it probably isn’t.
  • If you have doubts but aren’t sure, check your suspicions with friends and family.

Communication

Please carefully read through the following tips before entering a deal with another user.

  • Don’t post any sensitive data in the public questions & answers since the messages there are visible for all users (e.g. bank data, addresses, contact information).
  • Please inquire all the necessary information about the item in advance through the public questions and only make an offer if you are sure about purchasing it.
  • Always make sure to receive a proof of authenticity when buying high-valued branded items. Should you see very cheaply offered branded items, then you can be sure that they are by no means a bargain but in fact counterfeit.

Payment, Collection & Shipment

  • We always recommend meeting up in person and to exchange the item for the money. During a personal hand over the buyer can directly check the state of the item and the seller will immediately receive the money
  • Please discuss the shipping method with each other in advance. We recommend to always choose an insured shipping method even if this involves higher shipping costs. You will be able to track the package via a tracking number and it is insured from possible damages in transit. If you are sending the package uninsured there is no guarantee that it can be found again in the case of a loss.
  • Never send money or a check via post and do not let others persuade you to do so! Please agree on a safe payment method with each other
  • Make sure that the place to pick up the item matches with the location where the item was listed.

Selling step by step

Selling an item is easy and free!

1) List an item

Upload beautiful photos of your item ( do this by clicking add property)

Add a title and a detailed description of your item and its condition

Select a category to increase the chances of your item being found by potential buyers

Activate Buy Now if you would like to sell at a fixed price

Set a realistic price

Please add any information about payment and shipping methods as well as other relevant info about the item to the description (e.g. size/dimensions). We also recommend taking advantage of the five free photo slots in order to show your item from all angles.

If you have more than one of the same item for sale, it’s advisable to create a separate listing with an individual photo for each and to mention in the description that these are separate items.

2) Answer questions & offers of potential buyers

Answer any public questions that may arise

Use the “counteroffer” button if you want to negotiate the price or want to answer a question in a private offer

Please keep in mind that payment and shipping methods should be discussed and agreed on before accepting a deal because they may influence the price (shipping costs, payment provider fees).

3) It’s sold!

After both of you have confirmed the deal:

In case you will meet: exchange the item for money at the same time

Share sensitive data like shipping address and payment info in the private chat

Pack your item properly

Ship the item with the method the buyer has paid for
